The Sound of Music by Rodgers and Hammerstein will be performed four times by the Rainbow Players of Liberal. There will be a matinee on July 13 at 3:00 pm, and performances on July 10th, 11th, and 12th at 7:30 pm. The Cliff and Irene Pepper Showcase Theater on the Seward County Community College campus will host the show. Thirty minutes before each show, doors will open.
The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, Maria von Trapp’s 1949 biography, served as the inspiration for The Sound of Music. The musical, which is set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, follows Maria as she works as a nanny for a large family as she considers becoming a nun. She gradually develops feelings for their widower father, Captain von Trapp, as well as the children. He defies the Nazis despite being told to accept a commission in the German Navy. He and Maria agree to take the kids and leave Austria. Numerous songs from the musical, including as Do-Re-Mi, My Favorite Things, Edelweiss, Climb Every Mountain, and the title track, The Sound of Music, have become standards.
