L.A. Schools Telehealth Vendor Waited 8 Months to Report Breach

Another sweltering summer Friday brings with it news of yet another data breach that could compromise campus safety and student health information.

Once more, the second-largest school district in the nation is where the development is taking place.

After finding an illegal third party on its computer network, Kokomo Solutions, with whom the Los Angeles district has a contract to track campus safety concerns and provide telehealth services to students throughout the school day, revealed a data breach. Although the discovery occurred in December 2024, it wasn’t until August 5 that the California attorney general’s office was notified.

It is the most recent in a string of data privacy breaches that have affected schools in Los Angeles, including the collapse of a highly acclaimed $6 million artificial intelligence chatbot project last year and a well-publicized ransomware assault in 2022 that exposed kids’ private mental health records.
